Udawalawe is widely considered the best place in Asia to see wild elephants year-round, with a resident population of several hundred roaming its open grasslands. The park’s centrepiece, the vast Udawalawe Reservoir, creates a stunning landscape that resembles an African savannah, making wildlife spotting remarkably easy. A highlight for many is the nearby Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are rehabilitated before being released back into the wild. Aside from the gentle giants, you can spot water buffalo, spotted deer, and a kaleidoscope of raptors soaring above the scrublands.
